Photographer Ed Schofield on his Frome highlights

Lifestyle, food and travel photographer Ed Schofield works with independent businesses in the south-west. He and his wife and three children live in Frome. He tells Sundae his favourite spots in the area.

The coffee
Moo & Two on Catherine Hill is my top choice for morning coffee. You always end up in great conversation with people you’ve never met. For pastries, Rye Bakery at the station is a favourite. Their pain aux raisins remind me of childhood holidays to French campsites.

The walk
I love walking my dog on Gare Hill, just outside of Frome. The landscape feels like the Highlands or even Canada. Slightly closer to home, following the east Mendip way along the river in Vallis Vale is a great walk. The trees are covered in moss and ferns, and the river is beautiful.

The shop
It’s got to be Frome Hardware at the top of Catherine Hill. Dan, the owner is one of my favourite Fromies and sells all sorts of unique products for the home. We buy our candles and incense cones from there. He also offers custom laser printing, which is pretty cool!

The lunch
Owen’s Sausages & Hams is a must. Owen is a talented chef and friend, making smoked sausages down at Frome Station. The Simple Sausage is a smoked sausage served Swedish style in a bun with his homemade mustard, pickled cucumbers and flavour shake, but it’s the Silly Sausage that I tend to order. Each week Owen creates different toppings for the sausages; there have been some amazing combinations over the years. Paired with a pint of Woodshedding from the Rye Bakery bar, it’s a great weekend lunch.

The snack
A mention has to go out to Justin and his Trini Doubles, also available at the station. The perfect pillowy flatbreads with spicy curried chickpeas, chutneys and pepper sauce are amazing. Justin also now offers rotis, and the chicken roti is exceptional!

The day trip
We love a visit to The Newt for a run around and some gelato. But one of our top days out is an early morning trip down to Lyme Regis. I really like photographing harbours, and the kids love to splash in the shallow sandy beach – so it’s a win-win for everyone.
